The hills around Llanthony Priory will be alive with hundreds of walkers and runners on May 17th, all raising money for the local mountain rescue team.
The Big Black Mountains Challenge is celebrating its 29th year of raising funds for Abergavenny-based Longtown Mountain Rescue Team.
More than 900 walkers and runners from across Britain come to Llanthony Abbey for the annual event to complete a choice of three testing routes, of 43km, 29km and 16km.
Hazel Highfield, from Longtown MRT, said: “Its an amazing event and we regularly have people coming from across Europe to take part.
“It’s our most important fundraising event of the year and ensures that the team can continue as we rely almost entirely on public donations.
“We’d like to thank our sponsors Trekitt Mountain Sports and also the local community, without their continuing support we wouldn’t be able to run this.”
Abergavenny-based Longtown Mountain Rescue Team is made up of highly trained volunteers from all walks of life. The team answers calls to help missing or injured people in rural areas across South Wales and border counties. The team is a registered charity and dependent almost entirely on donations.
