Abergavenny Community Enterprise Partnership (ACE) is helping to realise the dream of developing a truly unique community quilt at their centre in Hillcrest Road.
The idea of starting a community quilt began with three friends sharing ideas over coffee. We wanted to create a piece of art that could be created from remnants or up cycling used clothing. We had inspiration from reading about what other Transition Towns had developed.
Our aim is to get people of Abergavenny together to make a community quilt to display at ACE Partnership. We aim to celebrate all aspects of Abergavenny life and to learn and share skills with each other along the way.
In order to be inclusive we decided that each panel would be a respected piece in its own right so if it’s just one stitch on an individual’s chosen fabric then it is good enough. We are inviting people to use their favoured methods of design and this could be knitted, painted or sewn. There is a set size for each square and Abergavenny is the theme so plenty of inspiration available. We believe that the journey of its development is as important as the completed item so friendships, fun and skill sharing is our focus in a relaxed atmosphere.
ACE Partnership is where the group meets on Thursday morning from 10.30 till 12.30. It’s a great place to meet and they have been so supportive of our idea. There is a large number of classes and groups that are held at ACE and they are easily affordable. A warm welcome and a cuppa is always guaranteed.
When the quilt has been completed we have plans to display it in a central location as an inspiration as to what can be achieved when people work together. We welcome all persons who would like to join us and the frequency of attendance is up to you. We just want the quilt to be created by cross sections of the community.
