You can look forward to Great Expectations when the talented Gwent Young People’s Theatre stage the RSC’s production of Charles Dickens’ classic drama at the Borough Theatre on Thursday 31st January, Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd February.
Jack Badman plays Pip whilst Young Pip is played by Ethan Hill; Joe Gargery is played by Lewis Indge; Leanne Murphy is Estella and Emily Mayger is Young Estella; Laura Hadley plays Miss Haversham, Ciaran Jones is Magwitch and Aidan Jones is Jaggers.
As always, this is an ensemble production with a huge cast which will delight those who know intimately what happens to social climber Pip as well as those who are new to this moralizing tale. Most of the actors are on stage throughout driving the action forwards by sharing the narration between them. They also react to what’s going on around them, ensuring that the pace is maintained.
The orphan Pip’s life is changed following a terrifying encounter with an escaped convict. Turning his back on his humble beginnings as a blacksmith’s apprentice, he strives to better himself and become a gentleman, unaware of the hidden dangers that await him.
This classic story lays bare a tissue of lies and guilt in Dickens’ least sentimental story while mustering a cast of unforgettable characters.
