This walk is based on one set by Raglan Local Ways, a local initiative that was formed in 2008 in order to open up footpaths around the community, which had been neglected for many years.

The walk is 2 miles across undulating countryside and does get very muddy after periods of rain. We suggest doing it after a dry spell or hard frost. It isn’t particularly challenging, although there are some inclines to get the blood flowing and quite a few stiles to clamber over, making this a perfect introduction to a healthy walking routine!
Plenty of parking can be found in the village of Llandenny, but be sure not to park where you are blocking driveways or exits.

To Get There

Take the A40 to Raglan. Take the Chepstow Road out of the village and take the first left (after about a mile). Follow the road to the village of Llandenny.

The Directions

1

From the tiny, triangular green at the west end of the village, set off up the road. Continue past the lane on the left and Tump Cottage on the right.

2

About 100m after Tump Cottage, go over the stile on the left, and walk through the field, keeping to the hedge on your left.

3

Coming down the hill you will see the stile in the hedge that you are heading for. Cross this and the small footbridge and turn right.

4

Keeping the stream on your right, follow the edge of the field to a gate (there is also a stile, but this was a bit overgrown when we went). Go through the gate, and continue to a small gate. Go through and continue to the corner of the field, where there is a small footbridge and stile. Cross these into the next field.

5

Follow the edge of the field almost to the other side, then turn left to cross to the gate in the opposite hedge. Go straight up through the next field to a stile near to Fir Tree cottage. Over the stile there is a lane: turn right onto this.

6

Walk up the lane a short way to join a road. Turn left on to this. Follow the road for about 600m.

7

Just before The Cottage, turn left over a stile and follow the very narrow footpath to another stile. Cross this and walk across the field bearing slightly left so that you reach the stream at a clump of trees and stone block footbridge.

8

Cross the little stone bridge and go over the stile on the other side. Turn left and walk up the field, keeping to the right of the large oak tree on the hill. Coming down the hill, head for bottom corner of the field, where there is a small footbridge and stile.

9

Cross the footbridge and stile, and head straight on up through the next field to a stile which leads onto a tree-lined lane.

10

Cross the lane and pass through the gate on the other side. Follow the hedge on your right to the bottom of the field near Rock Farm.

11

Turn right through the gate onto the track, and turn left. Follow the track back to where you started from.
